SS VS SSSS
That’s the maximum output I can reasonably do since the vote was finalized about 9 hours ago.. I got two Patreon comics on the way, and we’re going to play catchup with the regular story on Monday. But first…
Ladies and Gentlemen, we’ve made it.
We’re in the final round. Competing for first place against Stand Still Stay Silent. An absolutely, wonderfully, gorgeous comic by an artist who could draw better than me when she was five. Minna Sundberg is a talent-wielding, language-barrier-breaking, schedule-keeping MACHINE. So how can we possibly take her down!?
Your humble artist always has a solution. If the pandering comic above didn’t sway you that we’ll do whatever it takes to fit in… I have one more ace up my sleeve. If this final round has taught us anything, it’s that people like webcomics with S’es in them. So I’m officially changing the name of this comic to:
Shotgun Shuffle Sells Sea Shells by the Sea Shore
Even though some of those may technically be ONE word, it still gives us a 3-S advantage. We have the edge. We can’t fail.*
*(We can fail, but if we do it’ll be in spectacular fashion.)
Vote for Shotgun Shuffle at the ComicMix site found HERE!!!!
I know voting on sites can be tedious, but this is not. No need to register or fill any forms. Just visit the link and follow these steps:

I think it’s the “mutagenic plague kills everyone except Icelanders and a lot of Nordic people and cats, because magic or something”. Plus magic. And the idea that no one of Nordic descent anywhere else on Earth survived, because cats or magic or something. Plus the protagonists all seem to be idiots to some degree or other, or otherwise unpleasant. I keep reading it despite myself, hoping it gets better.

I think you’ve jumped to a conclusion there. When I read the comic it seemed pretty clear to me that there was nothing known about the rest of the world or even most of their own countries, so it’s likely that there’s similarly surviving communities all over the world in isolated places. Thinking central/northern Canada, the himalayas, the chilean mountains and much of Russia for example. They’re just not part of this story. How many American post-apoc stories have we all read that never even mention people surviving in other countries and only focus on what’s going on in the states? This is the same thing, except not set in America.

Other countries probably grow tired of seeing most movies set in America like Americans get tired of most movies being set in New York.

no, you are completely correct. I enjoy the fact that they are all Nordic in that comic. and the cats. plus magic. But then, I’m a gamer, so that may have something to do with it. But, to back up your point, Rusche, when Dr. Who decided to do a whole series of shows based in America, there was a HUGE negative reaction from the fandom, which are mostly European. I could see their point. It looked like the BBC was doing nothing more than dumbing-down the show to appeal to America’s massive TV audience. And sad to say, Our country’s Lowest Common Denominator when it comes to TV is pretty doggone low…

Given that radio communications is somehow disrupted by the mutated people/creatures and can be cleared up by magic incantations, I guess they have a right to call it “the silent world”, but it just seems like after 90+ years, *someone* outside would have built a boat or a plane or something. And if some people have natural immunity, why haven’t other isolated survivors shown up? I just have a major disagreement with some of their assumptions, I don’t have a problem with not being US-centric. I also don’t like mixing magic in with technology, when they start out with a modern technological society affected by a plague. It’s their world, of course, and they can make all the rules they want, but to me “magic” that isn’t explained can be a “get out of trouble free” card if not used correctly (see the “wizard” clearing up radio communications by chanting).

Different comics for different tastes then, I personally love stories with magic and technology coexcisting, especially if it’s a type of magic that I haven’t seen a whole lot before. I didn’t know squat about Finnish shamanism before, so reading the comic and subsequently reading every english article I could find on the subject has at least led me learn something new about another culture.

Well, being a devoted fan of BOTh these webcomics… AAAAGH, WHAT DO I DO?!?! Immunity isn’t guaranteed. YOU might have it, but that doesn’t mean your kids will. So, only isolationism spared anybody. Then include the fact that whales and dolphins ALSO mutated into hideous giant beasts… well, nobody sails much in the deep ocean anymore… smaller boats load themselves into huge ships which make the deepwater crossings. So, yeah. But, Minna has a big, long plan, and is VERY closemouthed about “other people”. So, none of us know for sure.

Two provisos: I have never read SSSS so am just discussing on what people have said above, and I am fond of quite a lot of fiction involving magic.
There’s plenty of sci-fi with “the next step in evolution” leading to mental powers, though generally they go with the the stereotypical psychic abilities (telekinesis & telepathy, possibly clairvoyance and a few other odds & ends to round out what’s needed for the plot). There’s also the oddball events leading to magic that could still theoretically exist in the future of a magicless world (for example, the reason used in Larry Correia’s Grimnoir series which is definitely one I hadn’t run into previously).
For the not finding anyone else part, difficulty of survival in general does tend to put a boundary on exploration. For the building planes or boats question, I have to say if I survived a global cataclysm and found mental powers occurring, I would wonder if the laws of nature had fundamentally changed in ways that might alter what percentage of my knowledge might no longer be valid. Past that with a disease as cause an increased fear of unknown others would be a likely result, and if the world’s dangerous enough that people setting out alone are unlikely to survive (and other survivor groups are likely to not help or actively drive them off), then your chances of discovering other pockets would be quite low.

Given that blue skies are created by Rayleigh scattering, couldn’t the airborne aspect of this bug somehow cause an occlusion of radio waves in that part of the electromagnetic spectrum?
Replied to: mR. Blue | Link | Like

Speaking of skies, did the Icelanders destroy every bird that tried to land or fly over the island? Since every animal except cats and people were mutated/glued together except for the ones they managed to keep isolated, seems that birds and fish would have been carriers at the very least.
At any rate, SSSS is in my RSS feed, and like I say I hope it gets better. Unless I’m misreading it and it’s supposed to be a comedy, in which case “oops”.

There has been a lot of speculation on if the magic was there all along and just ignored for the pretty tech distractions- since for the most part its real world applications are fairly easily overlooked in the modern world- or if something allowed magic to come back into the world and maybe at the same time enabled the Rash Illness to spread and mutate mammals in the first place.
Minna has kept a lot of what happened in Year 0 vague so far with a promise that our crew in Year 90 will slowly discover some of what actually happened as they explore the Silent World…

Well, if a disease is causing massive mutations and unlocking mental abilities in humans, you’ve got a few possibilities. The one that seems most likely to me is that since nerves are electrochemical cells, anything with a nervous system will, by definition, have some form of EM field. A change significant enough to bring about mental powers, could also bring about changes to the nervous system. The fact that people survive something doesn’t mean they might not be changed somehow. Differing strength or firing patterns in the general human population’s nervous system could turn people after the change into jammers for the frequencies that we noticed worked well before the change. With the lowered science knowledge as future generations forget and current progress turns to legend, and a possible lack of suspicion to look for such things in the first generation, developing new similar technologies could be basically building them from scratch.

While magic is often used as a cop out, SSSS introduces magic as something not necessarily as effective as most would expect. The fan base (called minions) have debated magic and much more on many occasions. In fact the “minions are a very welcoming and intellectual group who love nonsense and greet newcomers with imaginary cookies called ” squirrel cookies” (one of these squirrel cookies is supposedly alive and prone to biting people) and will invite you to join in their drinking game, centered around the comic and the disqus discussion board for it. It is advised that if you play the drinking game, you either take out life insurance, health insurance covering specifically your liver, or don’t actually drink alcohol for every drink, as the last people who attempted a read-through using alcohol passed out midway through and woke up with horrible hangovers hailing from hell.
Minions are often well read, an a number of them have even been promoting/supporting Shotgun Shuffle throughout the whole mix madness thing.
BTW, I love the comic and am annoyed that I never knew about it until this whole mix madness thing brought it to my attention!

Yes. That’s what led me to the comic i n the first place!
Someone falls in the water/gets splashed, take a drink. Someone mistakenly refers to “Braidy”/Reynir as a girl, drink! Someone notices an error in the comic, drink! Someone makes a reference to another fan-dom, drink!
Basically the idea of the game is to pickle yourself pretty quickly. It works so well that most of us have taken to drinking nonalcoholic drinks because the consequences of using liquor have been shown to include hangovers straight out of a sitcom.
Also, many people comment throughout the day, and risk their very jobs to be part of the discussion as much as possible… OK so they’re probably not risking their jobs, but there’s ALWAYS someone on to drink with or converse with.

I’d also like to point out that magic in SSSS is actually well defined, and there are info pages to answer many questions like that. Also, there is a strong reliance on Scandinavian lore and history, so some things that don’t seem to make sense or are difficult to understand can be cleared up by looking up the appropriate cultural concepts.

I do say that the greatest victory that we may have in this competition is the opportunities for friendships and cooperation across this fascinating technology we call the internet. Truly, is this not what it is for? So that it may bring us together rather than to tear us apart and to unite us rather than to divide us. This is the internet I hope to see, to build for the future. Quite right. There is only honor to be found when defeated by a champion. For it is a privilege to engage such individuals in a fierce and dignified bout. For every moment that we are assailed by life is another moment we can use to grow stronger. Then one day we shall be champions not of monument, but of momentum. So that those who replace us shall be even mightier than we to ensure a tradition of progression and a better future.

I’m unable to confirm or deny it, but nobody around NAV has complained so far.
Also I can’t know for sure but NAV’s fans do not impress me as wealthy or prone to donate, Aneeka patreon has only $68 per month for instance.

I can’t speak for others, but I don’t consider myself particularly wealthy. I’ve got a decent enough job to be able to ballpark a budget in generalities and be a paycheck or two ahead as opposed needing to go item-by-item and not having much cushion between paychecks. So I can flex around entertainment-allocated dollars here and there and amuse myself with previous purchases I haven’t gotten completely through fairly easily, but that definitely has limits.
I think the main thing is most of us do still strongly remember the time (less than a year ago) when Rusche was ready to throw in the towel and quit the comic because ads weren’t paying even half the hosting costs and he was having various other strings of bad luck and couldn’t justify the time spent any more. I seem to recall we practically demanded he set up a Patreon and I think we got it over $800/month in that first weekend. So sometimes we may get a little energetic about trying to make sure he continues to feel appreciated and to help keep things rolling along.

Well, since I have no possibility to do donations I never really read the options through. Now I feel that it’s fair to add a point: NAV has also a thing called “Aneeka Channel” that I just carefully read and although it’s private seems to work the same way as a Patreon.
I have no way to say how much NAV’s fans are giving that way so just in case I will take my comment back. Sorry.

Don’t worry about it.
Honestly, Patreon is quite recent and the need for something like it has been there long before it came around. Well, technically the mindset has been around for centuries, but I mean the ability for lots of people to easily and conveniently support artists a little bit at a time to provide sufficient support as opposed to requiring someone sufficiently richto support an artist outright.
Aneeka presumably just came up with a homegrown solution before Patreon realized it and now has no reason to bother giving an arbitrary third party a cut of donations intended for her when she has a perfectly workable system set up for herself already.

@Cray Z. Bouy – Well, I think the close race aspect will be due to the fact that both sets of fans are determined this year. Not to imply anything bad about content for either comic, just that there were plenty of fantastic comics that lost in all rounds (or didn’t get here in the first place). For example, I stand by my statement last comic that if Girl Genius fans had mobilized last round, they would’ve mopped the floor with all the rest of us (even with almost four thousand paid votes).

Replied to: Steve | Link | Like

Well, he’d want to get permission from the other authors. I’d also think once a week might be tough to keep up, but it would make a good Patreon fillter between story arcs. Alternately it could work as something to prepare for a main site filler he could prepare when time is abundant and pull out at any arbitrary time later. I know we have at least two other comic creators commenting regularly so I’d think at least the two of them would ok it (and there are a lot of directions Giant Buckinghams could go, after all).

Also, I think SSSS has more European audience and SS has more US audience, and we are getting to the time zone spot where US will have votes than Europe (as a whole) for a bit, just as they’ll likely have a higher vote spike that we’ll see as we wake up tomorrow.

Ah, didn’t mean to imply. Mainly I was thinking that I don’t know that SS has many European readers. I think we only have one self-identified European in our normal group of commenters (Lukkai, Swiss if I recall correctly).
The closest we have to a map at the moment is Rusche asked people where they came from and that became the locations of the voyeur site users (Lukkai did get probably the most artistically interesting looking user for his home town).

No worries. I’d actually be surprised if you guys don’t have a few more Europeans lurking already, and with the cross-over happening you definitely have a good shot at picking up several more. :-)
One of the Minnions (Lars_B, I think, though I could be wrong…) started our map about five, six months ago trying to see who was close to who since we do span six continents, even if we’re really only tightly packed on two. Someone else noticed the tight knot near San Fran and is planning a SSSS meet-up next month that I’m going to have to skip since I’ll be at roughly 38 weeks of pregnancy at that point and any length of travel will be no bueno then.

I’m sure we have a few more lurkers, and maybe regular commenters who didn’t identify origin, but as a first order approximation I just go by what people have said.
I can definitely see being particularly far along in pregnancy as being uncomfortable for travel, or, well, uncomfortable for anything.
In case it doesn’t come up again before your due date, congratulations on your forthcoming physical affirmation of you and your husband’s disdain for sleep.

I’m watching this round grinning ear to ear since no matter who wins a damn good “Cinderella” comic will be champion. I have to vote for my home, since I’ve been reading SSSS for a good long while now, but I do wish you all luck.

Will have to disagree. I think your style beats hers. Also, can’t see to get into SSSS.

Both their styles are really amazing, in my opinion. Shotgun Shuffle is definitely one of the best ‘arted’ comics I’ve ever seen. Up there with Questionable Content in quality, growth, and style! SSSS looks to be another top-notch arted comic, though I haven’t read it (merely glanced through the archive pages). It makes me REALLY miss Wayfarer’s Moon. The art was crazy! http://leighkellogg.deviantart.com/art/Wayfarer-s-Moon-2-Cover-Art-123262692
One of the gripes I had with trying to read Girl Genius was that I just did not like the art style at all. I felt like Rusche’s interpretations of those characters were so much more appealing. I find the GG style to be very goofy looking – and that’s coming from an avid OOTS fan. The plot sounds interesting from synopses, but it’s fallen to the wayside of other comics whose art I find too distracting to put much effort into reading.

Yeah. Haven’t been able to get into GG either. OOTS’s art isn’t great, but it’s story is (usually) funny. So I like it :)

Ooh, I like the artwork I’m seeing on their DA page! Just linked the GF and one of her Rocky cast friends to the DC Rocky Horror illustration they did! :D

It looks as if both communities are congregating nicely. So love is going both ways (which is awesome)… But referrals to “check out the others comic” is only coming from Rusche. Why no shout out to SS on Minna’s site? Hell, he did a whole comic, bragged about her, and linked.
I dunno, I just figured I’d see a little blurb or something with the new comic this morning

I’m not worried about it. I did all that to be nice, without expecting a link back, and think people should check out her comic.
Shes affiliated with Hiveworks, so perhaps they can’t link to comics outside that group of artists? Who knows :P

I meant more along the lines of simple courtesy, or ‘returning gesture,’ and not as a promotion of the vote. I’m sure Minna has a busy life, but so does Rusche who spent X-hours making a loveletter comic about HER comic. A simple link would be no effort on her part, to get the word out to her much larger audience.
And I don’t mean of this as a criticism of Minna either. I think I just expect kindness to be acknowledged.

I haven’t gone back to read SSSS yet, so I’m not sure entirely, but I did look for the past few days and the author didn’t reference the tournament at all in the comic posts. That being said, I don’t see a lack of mention to be anything other than continuing as before.

Pretty sure the PA people make enough off of merch to not care about it. Not to mention, if they wanted to buy their way to the top spot, either Holkins or Krahulik could pave the way with the proceeds from Twisp and Catsby strips alone.

This isn’t going to be a runaway election; 16 votes with under 15 hours to go is too close.
We need to start cutting some frozen, hanging chads. NOW!!
Shotgun Shuffle 1352 (31%)
Stand Still. Stay Silent 1336 (30%)
Remember to vote for GG: They need the support, too.
Not A Villain 905 (21%)
Girl Genius 812 (18%)

I don’t recall the timing. However, if he’s like me in terms of agreeing to do some form of weekend work, the timing is probably a “whenever it happens to be convenient before Monday” sort of thing. Also I think Stoirmcriostal mentioned in posts on ComicMix things that included awareness of the bracket being there to check. That being the case, I’m wondering if perhaps he’s going to avoid updating the bracket until he gets all the donation votes tallied.
