SS VS SSSS
That’s the maximum output I can reasonably do since the vote was finalized about 9 hours ago.. I got two Patreon comics on the way, and we’re going to play catchup with the regular story on Monday. But first…
Ladies and Gentlemen, we’ve made it.
We’re in the final round. Competing for first place against Stand Still Stay Silent. An absolutely, wonderfully, gorgeous comic by an artist who could draw better than me when she was five. Minna Sundberg is a talent-wielding, language-barrier-breaking, schedule-keeping MACHINE. So how can we possibly take her down!?
Your humble artist always has a solution. If the pandering comic above didn’t sway you that we’ll do whatever it takes to fit in… I have one more ace up my sleeve. If this final round has taught us anything, it’s that people like webcomics with S’es in them. So I’m officially changing the name of this comic to:
Shotgun Shuffle Sells Sea Shells by the Sea Shore
Even though some of those may technically be ONE word, it still gives us a 3-S advantage. We have the edge. We can’t fail.*
*(We can fail, but if we do it’ll be in spectacular fashion.)
Vote for Shotgun Shuffle at the ComicMix site found HERE!!!!
I know voting on sites can be tedious, but this is not. No need to register or fill any forms. Just visit the link and follow these steps:

Hello. I’m a dedicated fan of SSSS, and I never heard of SS until this comic tournament thing. I followed a link to this parody of SSSS and thought it was so funny and delightful that it’d be worth giving SS a try. And now I have read everything and I think I will continue reading. :)

I add my welcome as well. I’ve added SSSS to my list to get to as well.
The fact that you won’t see me commenting there is not lack of support for the comic or the commenters, but due to the fact that I’m an opinionated computer guy who despises Disqus. I’ve changed my mind on my initial hesitation regarding SSSS commenters from my first quick sample, just still hate the software.

Donor votes get added after the popular vote ends. What we’re seeing now is ONLY the regular vote.

Donations will be manually counted and added to the final totals usually within a day of when the main poll closes (last round the donations started being reported within half an hour or so, though I’ve seen it take almost two days before). We can see them here http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=458046&tclass=ComicMix%20April%20Armageddon%20Webcomics%202015 before the results are posted on the ComicMix site.

I expect the money is going where they say it is (the Hero Initiative money appears to go straight to them and not touch ComicMix’s hands, the other went to them and I’m sure they passed it on). I just also think in the vote direction they take the approach with real world elections. They figure the margins will be wide enough that close accuracy isn’t necessary. If it is really close, I would suspect they’d probably try to go back and treat it a little more carefully, but I wouldn’t be certain on that count.
I’ve never had an abundance of faith in mankind.

Mr. Blue here with the 20:30 report on this battle between the two newcomers to this contest. Stand Still. Stay Silent is a relatively young webcomic with a devoted readership coming from A Redtail’s Dream. SSSS (Stand Still. Stay Silent.) has an established style in art, story and mythos. SS (Shotgun Shuffle) is a webcomic that has cut it’s teeth over the years, SS seems to have been ripped out of the same clay that has given the U.S. Publix and Red Lobster. These environments are vastly different in terms of time, environments and dangers. However, I don’t think that Alex is going to show up in Bornholm tracking down Tuuri.

Rise my fellows! Shall we not be the beacon that all seek? Shall we not be the shelter from the storms of life? Shall we not be the stalwart walls that are the bulwark of the innocent? I say to you that not only can we make a difference, rather I say that we have made a difference! Did not Mr. Rusche once nearly give in to his struggles? Yet we banded together and brought him to the finals of this tourney! Did we not start with but a modicum of comments scattered throughout the tunnels of the archives? Yet now we have become a regiment, no a multifarious multitude of followers that write volumes of collaborative speeches in but mere moments! Were we not alone in our meager hovel in the vast nothingness of the internet. Yet today I see men and women from countries, from forums, from other comics banding together in this very spot! Therefor, harken unto me when I say this unto you, “We have made a difference!” We have made fellowship, we have made unity, we have made something unique to all of humanity. We have done something no one else has before. Assuredly I say unto you, we are not seeking to achieve victory, WE HAVE MADE VICTORY! Shall we be together? Shall we be united? Shall we be CHAMPIONS of humanity on this technological frontier! I say YES!

In my refreshes over the past 40 minutes, it’s looked like we’ve been fluctuating between 120 and 40 votes behind. In past fluctuations we’ve gone back and forth above and below.
There’s still the possibility that when ComicMix logs in to check things before recording final results that they may tweak the anti-fraudulent vote levels which could either add or remove from all comics by an unknown amount. So I think that’s our only main hope to pull through on straight votes as opposed to donations.

Oof, just VPN’d in to do another pass, but I can’t tell that it had much effect. This may be the round in which we lose the popular and have to look to our donations.
Even so, it’s definitely been exciting. The fact that we made it into the championship alone on popular votes (a single pseudo-tie notwithstanding) is definitely something to be proud of!

Girl Genius – 1269 – 19%

Speaking of site maintenance, I’d like to add a kudos to Jessica for keeping maintenance prompt. Since I monitor US-CERT for work, I had noticed a WordPress vulnerability I was going to mention to her this week, but by the time I got home and was about to send a message I saw she’d already applied the newest version.
In the spirit of kinship the traditions of our recent contest adversary, I suggest we all lift a toast to Jessica for keeping on top of things and keeping the site running.

Well, I think we’re late enough past the deadline that donation attempts back won’t hurt, so I’ll say that I stuck with my “52” votes theme and multiplied it by ten and donated 520 votes this round (assuming that the 25 cents/vote is what they’re doing and it wasn’t one of their many, many copy/paste errors). I remember you had done 400 last round, so if you matched that and didn’t increase, that puts us at 920 just for you and me. There’s also the anonymous $100 mentioned in the comments on ComicMix for at least 1320. Plus several other unknowns.
I refreshed again and got same as above, so I think it closed and we only need 79 more in donation votes ($19.75) more than SSSS to come out on top. Also, while I was hoping we’d come out on top with just votes, a win only needing 79 in donation votes wouldn’t be farther out of whack from SSSS in the semi-finals, so it doesn’t feel THAT skewed.
I guess we’ll have to see who comes out on top with donations.

I’m sure she’s gotten more hits as well, though I think you get more new hits by facing against a comic people know and/or care about (positive or negative, either from wanting to size up the competition or seeing if you can vote for the competition in good conscience).
She had Bubble Fox, Goblins, Magellan, Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, Misfile, Not A Villain, & you.
You had Kevin & Kell, Penny Arcade, Dresden Codak, Looking for Group, Property of Hate, Girl Genius, and her.
While I can’t be certain, I think you got the line-up with more exposure (i.e. more exposure from what I happen to seem to run across, which probably isn’t particularly representative), but I’m sure she got a lot of additional exposure as well.

I just looked it up in my history, but still nothing recorded yet. I think you guys will have a narrow win on votes but I’m guessing we’ll pull through with donations.
I replied to you on ComicMix, but I can say that there were donations with no comic last round but what ComicMix reported wasn’t correct. I read a lot of web comics and have a background as a software developer and a Linux sysadmin, both of which lead me to want to support open source projects at times. When I heard the creator of Comic Press had a computer meltdown, I thought a $100 donation would be appropriate, if less than the entertainment value I’ve received from all the wonderful webcomics that have used that product free of charge. I have been donating to Rusche in the amount of 52 votes due to his D52 and that I like decks of cards, so I donated $113 last round with the request that 52 votes go to Rusche and 400 votes not be assigned to anyone (because I donated late enough to have confidence we would either pull through against Girl Genius or have absolutely no hope even with another 400 votes, and I didn’t want to contribute to making things feel like a donation arms race).
So, actually there were MORE donations that weren’t assigned to any comics than the math shows. I noticed it before your comment, but didn’t want to post a question to avoid the donation arms race mindset.

I replied back over there already- I was curious if my friend Jake had gone through with his “I oughta” statement and actually donated during the semi-finals in the name of Colleen Doran’s A Distant Soil even though they weren’t in the seeding round this year and have been in hiatus for over a year since the web comic caught up to the print comic… but that would mean there was even more money not accounted for if he did (he’s not due in the store again until Sunday, so I can’t just ask him right now.)
I’m a huge supporter of the Hero Initiative when I have the funds available, and Glenn had been hoping for $1000 total for them this tournament (which we have blown completely away as of the semi finals with more than $1300 donated to the Hero Initiative so far). I’d just like to see the final totals credited to the awesome folks that raised each share of the money!
Replied to: Stoirmcriostal | Link | Like

Well, that depends. ComicMix might’ve looked at $113 total – $13 to SS and $100 to no one and just decided to put all $113 in SS. That’s actually the reason I’d like to see an answer. Not that I specifically mind it being credited to Rusche, it was really more of a pre-emptive attempt to try to make complaints about “buying a victory” less prevalent. Which is why the nearly $1k total made me facepalm just a little bit.

As I told Piney on the SSSS site:
It’s been as long as two days before they have updated the bracketmaster site (though that was during one of the long gaps between rounds). My bet is that they won’t announce the winner until Monday, and it will be sometime tomorrow (Saturday) that they update everything, since they aren’t trying to get the next round up less than 12 hours after they closed the polls for the last round this time… but I have been wrong before.

Unless the vote creator logs in and does some tweaks upward or downward to the fraud detection settings (in which case who knows), it looks like 2118 to 2040 them in popular votes, so if we have at least $19.75 more than them in donation votes we’ll win. I don’t think it’s possible that we have less than $500 in donation votes and I’d be surprised if we didn’t have at least double that.
With the past two rounds, a large donation total for Shotgun Shuffle is somewhat telegraphed. Based on reported values and assuming NAV & GG at $0 each, that would’ve suggested all donators last round for them needed to multiply donations by 4 to have a hope of winning if we did similar. On the other hand, our donations increased by a factor of four between the quarter- & semi-finals, so if we increased similarly again then they’d need to ramp up donations by a factor of 16. So we’ll just have to see how much that made the SSSS fans decide to leave it be or double down and see how we did as well.
Granted if the vote creator tweaks the fraud prevention settings to add or remove votes, there’s no way of telling how many it’ll impact for both of our comics, and the margin is close enough that could shift the voting score.

But I thought that six was sex in German. But is sex is six in Latin, then why doesn’t it show with the romance languages? I don’t know enough Italian to get there. brb.
I don’t know. And I got that from “European Vacation.” And the TSA? Hah, if you want to stand in line, complain about how you don’t have a love life, and then get groped before going on to your destination. You may want to think about that, because your mileage may vary depending upon location there.

Well, the issue with trademarks is that, unlike copyrights, failing to defend them weakens the protection they provide, and that’s by design. Basically choosing not to fight the use of a trademark by third parties who haven’t appropriately licensed them is legally the same as posting to the entire world that using the trademark that way is permitted. Sometimes, it’s to the trademark holder’s benefit and they do want to open and allow it (think Google with regards to people using their name as a verb meaning to search). If it’s not to the trademark holder’s benefit, unless they’re certain that it’s not going to be an issue if anyone else in the world uses the trademark that way, then they have to fight it.
This can lead to unfortunate cease and desist actions where a trademark holder might not actually object to that specific use, but refraining from fighting the use would be a viable defense for someone else infringing on their trademark later. Now granted, the trademark holder doesn’t have to be a jerk about it (see Jack Daniels for an example : http://brokenpianoforpresident.com/2012/07/19/jack-daniels-lawsuit-the-full-scoop/ ), but they DO have to fight it or risk losing the ability to enforce it similarly. Now I’m not sure just how “similar” something has to be to be given a pass if it’s not fought (for the Jack Daniels inspired book cover if it were allowed would that just allow it for other book covers, or would it then relax it for any item for sale other than liquor, or would it even allow it for similar liquor bottles; I don’t know).
So I don’t know the specifics of what you’re referring to, but depending on the circumstances there may be reasons they have to fight it.

There is a problem in that there were other organizations, including several groups in our armed forces, that have used similar graphics at one time or another along with the words wounded and warrior. While there was a big difference between the meaning of WWF the World Wrestling Federation and the World Wildlife Fund (which seems to now be called World Wide Fund for Nature). The nature organization took suit against the wrestling group. Now we have WWF and WWE.
Wounded Warrior is a generic enough term that there should be no way that WWP should be able to win, let alone have enough of actionable means to even convince a judge to hear a case. Count Imperious would know the proper terminology much better than I, and I can’t even find the dang article that listed the term that smaller charities could use in defeating this type of argument.
Replied to: mR. Blue | Link | Like

As I said, I have no idea what WWP may be/have been doing and certainly find it plausible that they’re being unnecessary jerks. As for other organizations fighting them and being able to win, well that takes money from the organization fighting and WWP. I can see an organization with a similar mission swearing at them and not bothering to fight to avoid wasting money that would otherwise be used to help people.
While I’ve never really liked pro-wrestling, I think the year after being forced to change their name/acronym, the newly minted WWE should’ve introduced a new wrestler that dressed in a panda mask and hands down topped all the rest at being a jerk (there is, perhaps, a large assumption on my part that such a thing is even possible).
For an amusing response to trademark cease and desist, see Clown Shoes brewery’s Vampire Slayer and how it changed to Undead Party Crasher and look at the background of the new label.
Replied to: That one guy | Link | Like

You realise that even here in Europe, there was sometimes confusion because of the WWF thing? And wrestling is not half as big here as it is in the US. Not by a wide margin. So people would not encounter the problem all that often and it still was often enough to get my attention.
So I can really understand them wanting the others to change the name. And since the Wildlife Fund held the acronym since 1961, while the wrestling federation did not adopt it before 1979. That being said, by now it seems to be on a level that the Fund is not bothered as long as the WWE does not use the acronym of WWF. But using the old logos in products and the full old moniker World Wrestling Federation is allowed.
One has to understand here, that the WWF actually licenses use of name, logo and acronym to chosen companies. Using the revenue for projects.
Replied to: That one guy | Link | Like

I understand a name, and I understand a logo, and I can understand a lot more oddly personalized things. I can understand a deliberately confusing misrepresented product in a similar market. I have an EXTREMELY difficult time accepting a three letter acronym being able to be enjoy trademark protection such that others are not allowed to use it.
I mean, I can’t imagine that no one else has ever used a three word name starting with two W’s and an F (acronym finder shows a Working Women’s Forum in 1978, a World Wheat Foundation from 1999, & a World Water Forum from 1997, at a spot check, there’s also a German TV named Westdeutsches Werbefernsehen that uses the acronym and though I didn’t see English hits, one of the pages titles in the search results listed a date of 1959), so trying to say it was used first seems like an overreach. The concept that I could, in theory, find a currently un-trademarked three letter acronym and trademark it and then try to force everyone else not to use it just seems like an asinine overreach.

I meant that because they had seniority in regards to the one they were bothered by, they wanted them to change instead of finding an alternate for themselves.
Granted, I don’t know enough of the details about this case to really judge it. All I know is that I actually noticed confusion a few times around here, so I can somewhat relate.

As TOG pointed out, holders of trademarks are expected to defend their property. If they did not take steps to defend their claim to “Wounded Warrior Project” and the associated logo, then I could start the “Wounded Warrior Program” claiming an expectation that WWP was not defending their trademark. While other VSPs are well intentioned, I may be using my organization to support cosplayers with stubbed toes such as myself (not really). Because they didn’t take action against legitimate use, they lose their legal standing to defend against illegitimate use.
As That One Guy’s example of Jack Daniels shows, there are very polite ways to do this without being a bully. They could politely ask KWW to change their name and or logo and explain why. They could offer to license the use of the logo or name for little or no cost to show that it was used with permission. They could find ways to cooperate with any of the various “Wounded Warrior” VSPs. They could, but they’re not.
The short version is this: I understand what they’re doing, but even the most generous assumptions don’t justify it. I have a strong distaste for WWP and would give to every charity they sued ten times over before I gave a cent to WWP.

I must admit, I am extremely unimpressed with how ComicM!X has handled this tournament, even as I’m ecstatic at how the two fandoms for SSSSSS have come together and made the Finals something to jointly party over rather than something to tear at the “enemy” about.

I was actually thinking of sending Glenn an email expressing a bit of concern with the schedule, and some suggestions for next year to improve, and hopefully amass a larger drawing to the vote with art incentives and such.

Yeah, a couple days in between rounds so that artists can come up with vote incentives (esp if you have to VOTE for them to see it) would be pretty cool. I’d already expressed dismay at the short turn-around time preempting incentive artwork by the artists. Yet how much more meaningful would that feedback be coming from someone who had a stake in the championship, and whose fans went hog-wild throwing money at their event…?

I don’t care if I have to omit my own comic and run the vote myself. I just want people to see who they’ll officially be voting for atleast 24-48 hours in advance. That’s all I ever wanted. Who in the NBA shows up to games not knowing who’s even competing? Vote from Monday through Wednesday, show results on Thursday, vote Friday-Sunday, show results Monday, vote Tuesday through Thursday, and so on…

The first batch of rounds in this contest were extended from two days to three. Last year, they did have four days. Who knows why things changed.

I’m not going to say that I personally went hog wild in terms of throwing money at this. Well, the last round I broke my rules and donated. But TWC already has the vote incentive, so why should CM attempt to copy them in that manner. That alone could also be something that their servers are not up to date to handle.
But on the other hand, there is the possibility of Patreon knocking some of the comics out of the competition. Personally, I only know of one comic that has a Patreon and releases those items after a time to the general public.
Still, it’s not a decent way to run a company.

Not sure that would work to a good benefit at all bossdude. They are hurting themselves in bad pr with not updating that much. But then, it could be one of two things here. The tournament is a branding item in order to get ComicMix out there in terms of cheap publicity. It’s bad enough that a VP of production is not on top of things, but not having things listed up front in terms of rules, period of time between each round of voting and time off between each round.
It seems that at best, it’s an ill conceived positive. At worst, it’s a bleeding ulcer that is not given them any positive benefits at all.

The fact that going to their home page freezes my browser for ~45 seconds has been making a bad impression on me. I can’t think of any other page on the Internet I’ve been to that’s regularly that bad.
I also wonder how much they’re maybe listening to complaints and wasting time on things that won’t happen (such as trying to run down why the poll-maker vote counts fluctuate so much) and then saying screw it and just throwing garbage out. Easy to do if you tire yourself out chasing your tail and then just toss out what you have done and stop worrying about it.
On the other hand, if they did send some questions to poll-maker and are separating out and/or recounting the donation votes from the semi-finals and maybe trying to get more accuracy than they’d been planning for the finals, then I can see why it might take longer (especially if poll-maker support offered them a response time estimate). As impatient as I am to see the results, I do have to say that commenting here I don’t feel I can argue that quality output isn’t worth waiting for. And if it’s not quality, then by the time I can judge that I can roll my eyes and go on with life, with slightly a more negative opinion of ComicMix and the organizer for the vote (both were already negative, though).

I can argue that the quality has not been as good as it could have been. Going by the posts made and not by the statements made near the end of those posts, that alone is not a good sign that these things were planned out. I mean, hell, have a recap for of the past year for the next year before the month is up after the last vote is tallied.
But then, I doubt that this place has a morgue at all. Nor does it seem that they have a secretary for the VPs. Last year, they had a new problem of having to have a run off for several different rounds. But then again. If someone were to build the better mousetrap and not advertise it, how are they going to expect anyone to break down their front door trying to get to it.
On the other hand, something like this could be a bonanza for black hats and script kiddies. However, having to juggle their press for the Hugos and whatever else they have on their plate, meh. Like it was said earlier, they’re just shooting themselves in the foot. Pun intention there G.

As frustrated as I have been with ComicM!X, I don’t feel like it’s all that important who won at this point. Of course I want Chris to win because he is an awesome human being who deserves every good thing that ever happens to him, but it isn’t that important. No matter what the final numbers say, Chris has a lot to be proud of and placing second has still earned him some new fans from SSSS. Even better, those fans seem to be as lively and engaged as we are and we’ll make excellent additions to each other’s families.
(Of course I’ll still be sad if Chris doesn’t win)

Minna and Chris won, along with all of the fans of both (all three) webcomics. (Minna does “A Redtail’s Dream.”) Our TWC numbers are edging back down. We may be approaching the 20s in a week or two. But hopefully with a month or two, Chris will be seeing four digits on his Top Web Comic rank.
